The city of Lviv, at the crossroads of Eastern and Western Euope has changed hands many times over its history. Ukrainian, Polish, Austrian, German, Russian and Soviet governments have ruled the city, often changing its name. The most last impact has been in the architectural feel of the city.

There is an old tale of an East-bound train from Paris and West-bound train from Moscow stopping at a train station. The Frenchman, upon exiting his train, remarks, "I am finally in the East!" The Russian leaving his train, remarks, "At last I am in the West!"

Lviv has for centuries been a crossroads of trade and culture - boasting not only an important market, but also a university and chuches of many denominations: from Catholic and Armenian cathedrals to Jewish synagogues.
